Floris Vanhoof
Floris Vanhoof is interested in the hybrid form of music, photo and film. Projections and music produced by a modular synthesizer are central to his work. His first projections were 16 mm celluloid experimental films which evolved into pure visual experiences in which he questions viewing patterns. His work is rooted in structural film and early electronic music.
Vanhoof creates his own instruments and installations and explores the grey area between image (film or slides) and light (projection). As a media-archaeologist, Floris Vanhoof confronts the digitally discriminating visitor with flickering 16 mm films and slide installations, formats whose days are numbered. He deliberately choses analogue technology, not for nostalgic reasons, but because he wants to experiment with what used to be known as ‘high-tech’. His work also consists of new technologies such as microprocessors. Technology is not an end in itself but a means of exploring images, ideas and sound in a poetic way.
Floris Vanhoof (°1982, Mol) lives and works in Antwerp. In 2005 he obtained a Master’s in Audio-Visual Arts, with a specialisation in Experimental Film, from Sint-Lukas in Brussels. He recently exhibited at Netwerk Aalst (2016), Agency for Poor Media/Werktank, Leuven (2016), Beurssc50uwburg, Brussels (2015), Kunstencentrum België, Hasselt (2013), Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle (2013).
Floris Vanhoof is geïnteresseerd in de hybride vorm van muziek, foto en film. Projecties en muziek geproduceerd door een modulaire synthesizer staan centraal in zijn werk. Zijn eerste projecties waren celluloïde experimentele films van 16 mm die zich ontwikkelden tot pure visuele ervaringen waarin hij kijkpatronen in twijfel trekt. Zijn werk is geworteld in structurele film en vroege elektronische muziek.
Vanhoof creëert zijn eigen instrumenten en installaties en onderzoekt het grijze gebied tussen beeld (film of dia’s) en licht (projectie). Als media-archeoloog confronteert Floris Vanhoof de digitaal discriminerende bezoeker met flikkerende films van 16 mm en dia-installaties, formaten waarvan de dagen zijn geteld. Hij kiest bewust voor analoge technologie, niet om nostalgische redenen, maar omdat hij wil experimenteren met wat vroeger ‘hightech’ heette. Zijn werk bestaat ook uit nieuwe technologieën zoals microprocessors.
Technologie is geen doel op zich, maar een middel om beelden, ideeën en geluid op een poëtische manier te verkennen.
